Biking as a mode of transportation is popular here in Austin. In some neighborhoods over 13% of trips are made by bicycle.

Seriously? This is news?

Austin has been a bike friendly city ever since I can recall, even in the early 90's, which comes as no surprise considering its a college town.

I have no problems with cyclist but !!!!

1. They need to obey the rules of the roads.

2. They need to be required to take a riding class.

3. They need to be insured.

4. They need to be registered.

5. They need to wear correct gear at all times while riding.

6. They need to pay a road tax just as automobile owners do.

My hometown is La Grange, Texas. Once a year at about this time of year thousands of cyclists come to La Grange from Houston and spend the night on their way to Austin. It is a 150+ mile fundraiser for a great cause. The National MS Society. The problem occurs when the riders get out into the lane of traffic for cars and trucks, etc. and they do it on a regular basis. One day, a rider is going to get killed. I salute them for this cause, but if you are reading this post, please stay on the shoulders. If there are no shoulders, stay all the way to the right. Pay attention!!! If a vehicle comes upon you from the rear, move over. Thanks.

The whole argument about paying taxes is ridiculous. Most of them have a car, pay income and sale taxes.

They do not need to be insured or registered. If a person can't see that a person is on a bike in front of them, then maybe they don't need to be driving.

If I have to pay taxes on every vehicle I register, then bike owners should too, if they travel the same streets and roads.

"State law requires that bicyclists abide by the same basic rules as all other road users." See...
