I dont know if this will count but I did that for spring break many moons ago. Of course you will probably get better hotel rates if you stay in Brownsville and the drive to S. Padre is about 30-40 mins if my memory serves me right. I would think that being 30 - 40 min from the beach is the only downfall. Brownsville is actually decent and of course you can walk across the border to Mexico.

First, wrong forum. Second, Brownsville is not that far. Third, if you're going to SPI, just stay at a hotel there. They need your business. Look around for the best rates.

If I was interested in visiting South Padre, I'd stay in South Padre. I would not stay in Brownsville if SPI is your final destination. Whatever savings you might get, from staying in Brownsville, is not (in my opinion) worth it. Consequently, we go to SPI every summer and will be there for July 4th this year.

If you do a beach vacation. You need to stay on the beach. Brownsville & the whole valley are great for touring. It has it's own charm but SPI is beautiful & you can enjoy the beach at night. you want have to drive, you can be on the beach early, before everyone else & you can enjoy the Island without worrying about leaving for Brownsville every night.

three years ago the whole family took a trip down to Padre and ended up staying in Brownsville at a days inn. It was last minute trip and we had a lot of kids with us. It worked out perfect. Stayed at the beach all day went to brownsville one night for dinner and then to Padre one night for dinner. It was worth it to me. Never really looked at priced on Padre Island right about now but Im sure they are booked up for the most part and a little bit more pricey.
I dont remember the drive being longer than 20-25 minutes.

We have access to a 7 day condo deal (we are not considering staying on the Island, at least for this year) which, for most places I've seen on the Island, that would equal about two days (~$400).

I go to South Padre quite often, since I live 75 miles to the west, down Expressway 83.

What we have started doing is staying in Port Isabel. Yea, there not fancy hotels with mints on your pillow, but we dont really like mints anyways. In Port Isabel, there are a few motels/hotels that have refrigerators/stoves/dishes/microwaves, and good views of the bay. And we are usually some of the 1st people on the beach before sunrise, cause all we have to do is cross the bridge and were there.

My .02

Currently, during the week anyways, most all the hotels/motels on the island are like $39.99 a night, then on the weekends they raise them like $10 or $20 bucks. I think they are hungry for business right now, some hotels are closed due to Dolly and the fixing up because of it.
