I don't visit Abilene very often, and when I do I usually don't have much time to stop and explore. I can remember visiting a sort of "mall" in the mid 1970's with my grandparents. It wasn't very big as far as I can remember, but it was various shops located in a mall type atmosphere. A common indoor corridor. This was probably a few years before the Mall of Abilene was even built.

From my memory, it seems like this was place located near the same expressway that runs past MOA, but it was further north and on the other side. (I may be wrong about this location, though.)

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? There aren't many places like this even in larger cities, so I feel like it must have stood out as being uniqure. Maybe the place is still in existence?

It was on South 1st Street at the Winters Freeway, or Pioneer Drive... the west side of town. It's got a KMart now, not much else, just a big parking lot.

Thank you. Is the original building still there?

Just remembered, it was called Westgate. I think the building is still there but I haven't been there in three years so I'm not too sure. As you may know, it's an easy place to forget.

Very little of the original building is still there (only where the old Montgomery Ward store used to be on the very end). As I recall, some other non-retail establishment moved in that old building way back (can't remember exactly what). The rest of the old Westgate mall was razed many years ago and is now a strip mall that, as mentioned above, includes a K-Mart and a larger parking area.

Thanks for the additional info.

I actually prefer indoor malls to anything else. It's sad so many of them have shut down.

Western Plaza, on Interstate 40? I have no idea if it's still there, but here's information and photos if it jogs any memories
