$500-600 will get you in the burbs, not a real great place Im guessing. But Im inner-Loop, its more expensive closer to $800 for a 1-br can go $1000 or so. Look at apartment finders or something, look Midtown, Montrose, Heights, Washington Ave, Galleria.

As I native Minnesotan Ive had minimal issue with blending in. On occasion someone will call you 'yankee' for geographical reasons, others albeit far fewer for political ones. Keep in mind, while Houston may vote democratically, its a far cry from the Wellstone/Franken democrats up there.

Houston has one of the best medical centers in the world, so Doctors and hospitals are plentiful. There are lots of kids activities too.

It all depends on where you work and how long you want your commute to be. Houston is huge and your commute could easily end up being 1+ hours if you are not careful. I could not recommend a place (for example) like CyFair if you will be working in Clear Lake, talking about a suicidal commute.

I would budget about $750 for a nice apartment in a good suburban area and more if you head downtown. It is possible to find apartments for less but it will take some hunting. Also consider that this price does not include utilities which can run more than $100 in the summer depending on the size, energy efficiency, and your comfort preferences.

Thats great 750 plus utilities is great. I got my job lined up today so now we'll try to find good residential areas that are close to that. I have to admit when I was reading the last post and started reading about utilities I was waiting for sticker shock on the price of them, but over a hundred doesnt sound to bad... Up here in MN our utilities in the winter are nuts im talking 300-400 a month extra in the really cold months IE dec, jan, feb... it. is. ridiculous.

Oh they can get pretty high. What area will you be working in so we can help you narrow it down a bit.

It's actually not in Houston, on the map it looks like a suburban town.. Sugarland is where the address is. So what is the housing situation like right in that area? Is Sugarland a decent place?

Sugar Land is an upscale suburb with lots of master planned communities. Search the Houston forums for Sugar Land and you'll find hundreds of threads. It was its own town at one time but now it's a suburb.

Yes, it is nice but pretty suburban and a favorite of the stroller set. Lots of young families, lots of schools and parks. Not a prime destination for singles though.

I suggest you at least consider the Fort Worth/Dallas area. Jobs are available especially in the nursing field and building is going on all over plus I'm guessing this area would be both safer and less expensive than the Houston area plus the weather is better, at least I think it is. And as far as being called a "Yankee" I'm an old Texan and whenever a Texan calls somebody a "Yankee" it's usually just a friendly dig. Pokin' fun, as we say.

Sugarland is nice, you should be able to find something there. Just be wary of the area between Sugarland and downtown. There is also a bus that goes from Sugarland to the Med Center if the wife gets a job there.
