People in McAllen look to San Antonio as the big city they relate with. Really no comparisons, it is just the closet one in distance and culture. McAllen is a small, small version of San Antonio with warmer weather year round.

San Antonio is Texas's 3rd largest city with several million people. McAllen is a small city with a population of 140,000, though the MSA is 750,000. Both have a strong Hispanic influence and lots of history tied to Mexico. McAllen is 4 1/2 hours south of San Antonio so is a bit warmer. Both offer friendly people and low costs of living. San Antonio has more man-made attractions such as the Riverwalk and the Alamo. McAllen is known for its wildlife watching opportunities (especially birding and butterflying), shopping, and quality restaurants. Both have active nightlife scenes, though, of course San Antonio's is larger.

Let me give it to you straight. I live in SA and do business in McAllen all year round. SA is a major US City with a huge diversity a people. Yes we have a strong Mexican influence, but if you are not interested in that, you could live your life in SA without participating (I don't know why you'd give up Fiesta and margaritas, but if you wanted to you could.)

Now in McAllen, Mexican nationals or first generation Mexican Americans are the majority and all others are minorities. The first launguage spoken almost everywhere in McAllen is spanish. Advertisment and waiters in spanish. Ofcoarse most people are bilingual even if their english isn't great. McAllen has a few "nice clean new" areas, but a lotof areas look like there in Mexico. And the city is MAJORILY POLITICAL! Also lingering remindings of MEXICAN POLITICS!

So if you are Mexican or prefer a spanish speaking culture you may love McAllen. I prefer a more diverse culture and attitudes that I find in SA.

Good Luck

Not sure that I would call San Antonio a major U.S. city... to me it's a step above Tampa Bay. I think of Dallas and Houston being major U.S. cities.
