We are looking for a Central Texas small town within 1-2 hours of a city
(Austin) that is not overrun with tourists. We have been all over the hill country but not to Lampasas. Their web sites are interesting, their tax base is reasonable. I was wondering if anyone had any first hand knowledge on the town itself.

We live in East Texas on 14 acres of piney woods with lots of flowers and lovely yard. Will I be able to garden in Lampasas?

Gail

Hi, Gail,

I live in Temple but have driven through Lampasas often. It seems to be a nice town. Yes, you should be able to garden there. The climate is mild and there is decent rainfall. Good luck.

Thanks, Rick

There is a great old house there I want to see. I don't want to build anymore houses because you just can't put the charm in them the old ones have. The cost are just too great. Nice to hear a positive remark for Lampasas as I can't find many people that have ever been there.

Gail,

you're welcome. I've only stopped there a couple of times, but I have a nice impression of the town as a whole. It has a small Wal-Mart, a couple of fast food places and some small-town restaurants that the locals like. It is located on the Lampasas River (hence the name, eh ) and is about 70 miles or so NNE of Austin. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the town.

You probably already know this, but use caution when looking at those old houses. The plumbing, wiring, roof, floor, windows, etc, etc, etc, may need fixing or replacing. I agree about the "charm" that many of the old places possess, but they can be money-pits. If maintenance was done on a regular basis then an old house should be a good house.

Best of luck to you.

Rick

Default Lampasas

Lampasas is a beautiful little town in a very nice area, in my opinion. I have been through it lots of times, but I haven't spent much time there. If you have a job there, or are retiring, I would recommend it. Vegetation has no trouble growing around there.
