We will be taking a family vacation to Florida this summer and will be driving from TX . Largely we will take 1-10 all the way, however one of the members of our family doesn't do well with tunnels. Is there an alternate route we can take to get around the tunnel on 1-10? Any other tunnels I need to know about from TX -Florida? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I know of only one place there is a tunnel - under Mobile bay/river - but it's easy to detour around it if that's a problem. There is a bridge that crosses on old US-90 which ties into IH-10 at either side of the river.

No tunnels n texas just upper and lower decks in San Antonio past downtown , in houston just big freeways and overpasses and bad drivers, be aware and pay attention to the signage because you could end up headed towards Dallas or Waco if your in the wrong lane. Go to Texasfreeway.com and you can look at the roads.

depending on where you start--the Mobile tunnel is the only one--I think it was out of commission the last time we drove that way--

frankly a lot of that is BORING--some parts of the highway are really away from any type of commercial/residential strips except for the get-on/get off exits--
nothing to really see
hope your kids like to read or you have portable DVDs for them...

we stopped at the battleship Mobile one way (our son about 16 then and my husband loved it, daughter and her friend were totally bored)
parts of I-10 were out of service more than a year after Katrina--don't know if it is ALL back in service now--but you can probably google info about it

and frankly watch out for speed traps--all the locals and state police are looking to bolster the budget by catching anyone with expired stickers, exceeding the limit, or for other violations

The concepts of "road trip" and "Interstates" seem incompatible to me. Take a real road.

there are road trips and there are "rode" trips--where you feel like you are the one hard-ridden...

problem is that there is probably not really a good alternative

not like the drive from DFW to Austin/San Antonio where you can choose I-35 or a couple of other state highways

you can use Hwy 90 vs I-10 in some parts but Houston itself is so much a spaghetti bowl of freeways--I try NOT to spend any more time there than I have to--

for them it is probably cheaper to drive through as fast as they can vs buying air fares for everyone...and saves renting a car as well

Jaxart is right. My spouse is from Mobile and as many times that I have been there I have never been in the tunnel. If you are heading east on I-10, exit Canal/Water St, take a right and you will cross over the tunnel. When you get to Government St/US 90 take a right and that will get you back on I-10.

Hope you don't go far into Florida. Once you pass the bridge after Pensacola, get ready to be bored for hours with the only excitement and entertainment you will have is counting trees.
