I don't know if the same fee charged a new resident is the same, but there used to be a $90 tax in addition to other registration fees.

I was told that I would have to pay taxes when I come to register it here in TX. If I produce evidence that I paid taxes in the other state, they will only make me pay the difference. I wonder if they would refund me if it was the other way around! Hah.....

Incorrect.

I bought a used car in Florida (from a dealer) and Colorado (from a private seller). I paid SALES tax in Travis County when I registered the car. I did not pay sales tax in Florida or Colorado.

Correct. This is what the state controllers office told me.

Still not sure why a 46 year old used car should be taxed every time it is sold, but maybe that is just me.

Well....the car I bought in Colorado was a 1997 - but I was the 4th owner. So it was taxed four times.

I think the simple reason it is taxed each time is because cars are generally big-ticket items and they are an important source of tax revenue.

I suppose a used car 2 years old is just not different (taxation - wise) from a 50 year old car.

That's correct! IF you had proof that you paid sales tax at the point of purchase, you would not have been charged sales tax in Texas (except for paying a difference if the tax in Texas is higher, as has already been stated).
