What are the income differences between the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Houston for the same type of jobs?

Medical positions, such as nurses & doctors in Houston have some of the highest paid salaries in the US. They also realize more net income because the cost of living is much less as opposed to somewhere like California or New York. One of my close friends tried moving from Houston to San Jose last summer to be a nurse & she lasted no more than 2 weeks before she moved back to Houston. She was never offered a permanent position & was working at like 3 different hospitals just to pay the rent which was over $1,500 a month for an older efficiency apartment. Ridiculous.

Oil & Energy are also big right now in Houston. "Green" jobs are on the rise too as we transition towards that type of technology.

Houston > San Antonio >>>> RGV

Pay wise for the same job.

San Antonio > Houston > RGV

Cost of living wise.

Actually, the medical jobs in the RGV (@ least in McAllen) are some of the highest paying in the country, and well ahead of pay rates in Houston. I do know what I'm talking about, as my husband, as well as myself, are in the medical field.

For homes in SA I've seen some great deals, when it would land you in a bad area in Houston. The only areas that seem more expensive are homes in the far NW (hill country view) and they aren't that much more either. Groceries seem slightly cheaper, and electricity is a lot cheaper. Everything else seems about the same.

As far as medical in the RGV, that's going to be high paying considering it is the #1 lawsuit hotbed in the entire country. They have to pay people well or no one would work there.

So true--LOL! We make about 180k/yr. more than we did in Houston--at least until the healthcare reform goes through! "Make hay while the sun shines!"
