Today I tried Christian's Tailgate (formerly Totem) on the corner of I-10 and Washington. Wow, I was shocked at how good it was. It still wasn't as good as In-N-Out, but it'll satisfy my hamburger cravings until In-N-Out gets here in 2-3 years.

Now, to find a donut shop that compares to Krispy Kreme...

I stopped reading this thread when the OP wrote:
"I just pray that they open a Houston location soon after Dallas. Sad that Dallas is getting it first...I absolutely can't wait."

Just a figure of speech I guess, but REALLY - PRAYING for a burger joint?

Yikes.

When I lived in the SF Bay Area I really liked In-n-Out, Carl's Jr, and Wienerschnitzel (way better than James Coney Island). I'd love for them to come to Houston. Carl's and Wienerschnitzel are rather annoyingly everywhere else but Houston. I've tried to like Whataburger, but I think it's mediocre at best. I'd rather have Steak N Shake instead, Houston only has one. In-n-Out in Texas would be great, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Texas may have better burgers at the margins, but the LA area does have some great burger joints like The Apple Pan and Pie N Burger, and great Jewish delis like Canter's (my favorite) and Izzy's. Original Tommy's is a pretty good local burger chain. There's almost nowhere else, though, with such a great concentration of hot dog joints as LA. Maybe Chicago, but I'm not a fan of their canonical dog.

I tried Pink's Hot Dogs out in LA because this one local chick in our group of out of towners kept raving about it saying we had to try it before we left California. I found it to be mediocre at best. Definitely not worth the line we had to stand in to order it. Famous people have eaten there & plastered the walls with autographed photos...so what, we get it already.

I tried Pink's too. I understand why tourists go there, but I don't get why locals do. Pink's isn't all that far from Canter's Deli. That's some good food.

On a trivial note, they say Aerosmith's song "Pink" was inspired by that place.

Wienerschnitzel is some crap to me. I make better hot dogs at home and the chili is awful.

Wienerschnitzel double-cheese chili dogs are one of my secret shames. So anti-foodie and yet so good.

I told her that I'd heard several similar rumors for the past few years, but nothing ever comes from those.

She then told me that I could believe her or not believe her, she didn't care, but she was specifically asked to move to Dallas for the first location after the infrastructure was set up later this year.

I called In-N-Out's customer service line (the agent said she worked at corporate) and she said something very close to the following after I asked her to confirm my story: "I can say the next state that we will be in is Texas. We will definitely be skipping over New Mexico and we will be in Texas very soon. I can't give you a firm date on when we'll be there, but we will be in the market."

I just pray that they open a Houston location soon after Dallas. Sad that Dallas is getting it first...I absolutely can't wait.
Last time I had In-N-Out was in L.A.

They are sooooo good. Good luck TX with getting one..you'll enjoy it.
