One colony does not make the majority.

This is obvious evidence that they were Protestant. Since the time of Elizabeth I, the Puritans have tried to "purify" Anglicanism of Popish practices (to no avail).

Quakers were treated as harshly as Catholics and Jews and were often tied to the back of a wagon and lashed all the way out of town in some states...William Penn founded Pennsylvania as a haven for Quakers which were not considered "Protestants" by sects like the Puritans and Separatists and other denominations
Quakerism comes from Anglicanism, so it has a Protestant heritage.

The point being Catholicism was ALL ABOUT CONTROL. The Church of England was founded ONLY because Henry the 8th was not granted the divorce he had requested, otherwise England would have remained Catholic. Essentially there WAS VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE between the church of England and Catholicism. Both Kept the scriptures out of the hands of the common people as a way of manipulating and controlling their subjects. Not until after Queen Elizabeth was almost assassinated did the Church of England become more favorable to the Protestants. Even then they were still very rigid. The Seperatists wanted to break away from the Church of England and it's romanish/high church (emphasis on rituals) where they could read and study and follow the scriptures for themselves. This was referred to as "idividual soul liberty". It was a key idea in the protestant reformation, and one the "powers that be" hated. KIng Kames sent the Presbyterian Scottish over to Northern Ireland to settle Ireland and to Keep the Catholic Irish at bay but eventually but within 100 yrs many of the Protestant Scotch -Irish of Northern Ireland migrated to America for greater religious freedom and and greater opportunites, eventually settling in PA, OH, and the Appalachia Regions. This group of people were very influentiual in the Revolutionary War.
While it is true some of the founding Fathers were Deists, it is also true theat the over riding principles ingrained in the people of that time through social conditioning and family heritage were principle grounded in the ideas of Judeo/Christian orthodoxy. (as opposed to Islam) The FACT THAT THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS PURCHASED AND DISTRIBUTED 22,000 COPIES OF THE BIBLE TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE CITIZENS OF THE NEWLY FORMED COLONIES PROVES THIS. They were not handing out Korans, or playboys, or humanist manifestos. Why it is so hard for you people to see that the majority of the citizens of our country and it's founders were heavliy influenced by orthodox protestant Christian Principles is beyond me. You are looking back on history through the adjusted lenses of your 21st century culture, replete with your biases and political leanings which is why you want a didtorted view of the past.

Additionally the treatise regarding religious liberty in VA was because the Baptist feared the Catholics(across the border in Maryland) or others who had persecuted them in the old world would gain power her in the new world and persecute them again...Jefferson assured them this would not happen and hence he wrote the bill regarding religious liberty. I am not saying Catholic people themselves or people that atend the cathoic church are bad but the HIERARCHY(leadership and structure) is ALL ABOUT CONTROL...That is why the Baptists and other groups tend to be more independent. For years all the way up to 1960's..(will have to check on this date) the Catholics discouraged their people from reading the scriptures for themselves. Incredible...that wasn't that long ago. The protestents are not without fault but int the historical context you could see why they were concerned. they had faced persecution from Catholicism AND the Church of EnLAND.
Rememebr the first colony in the US...and probably in the history of the world was Rhode Island founded by a Baptisit- Roger Williams...and now the vey group that brought us religious freedom is probably the group that is persecuted in the media the most. Interesting. Roger Williams where are you when we need you?

Ie. Rhode Island the first colony to Promote "religious freedom". In His treatise Roger Williams delineates that the STATE should be handcuffed and not interfere with the free exercise of religion. NOT VICE VERSA. He argued that America should be a place where there should be open and public debate regarding religion and the scriptures , and that it should occur without the threat of intimidation, or the threat of being silenced by the authorities, regardless of your views. He flet that in this democratic context the best ideas would rise to the top and he felt confident that it would be the ideas of true Christianity and of jESUS, apart from denominational structures which in his view were all about control. It seems people don't want to teach our chidren about our original culture, they want any Christian influence extinguished, and any secular or humanist ideas to be magnified. The want our children to trust in the almighty Government, not in the ALmighty God of the majoirity of our forefathers. As America's unique"ness" becomes a thing of the past, America's future will crumble and fracture into a thousand different directions...a people without a center..lost and wondering why. Jesus is still at the center of human history it is BC. and AD and much as you people want to ignore him...change our dating system to BCE & CE...ludicrous. Keep on trying to whitewash history. The truth will come out eventually.

Queen elizabeth almost assissinated by Catholics...would have been as bad as the kkk assasinating a president but noone seems to blink an eye at how corrupt the catholics were...just as bad as the kkk. in carrying out their "religion". Any religion that uses violence to forward their belief system is corrupt. ie. ISLAM. EVEN post 3rd centruy Catholicism- which at the time was synonomous with true christianity. Unfortunately, "tares grew up among the wheat, and goats among the sheep and the tares and goats took over the "church" and eventually weeded out the "wheat" & "sheep"-ie true believers, from leadership. So the Catholic church became corrupted and turned into a business by people with a more secular (not spiritual) mindset.
