just drove into Toledo to work for the week.the downtown looks better than I remember and the skyline looks a little bigger also then I remember.its been about 27 years.the first thing I notice is morning rush hour is nonexistent and very few people on the street. the downtown looks like it could have some potential if people would show up..without a doubt Toledo has the fourth best skyline in Ohio after the big three..

I haven't read all 29 pages of responses yet, so I don't know if the following concern has been addressed. What growing zone is Toledo? When we go there, I never see azaleas and rhododendrons. Do these grow out there? Any gardeners care to comment?

You'd probably get better answers for this if you had started a new thread, since this thread is about crime and blight.

It's Zone 6A or 6B, depending where in the county you are. We had an azalea growing up. You're right that rhododendrons don't seem to be "in style" in the Toledo area, but I don't see why you couldn't grow them.

I really recommend a visit to the Toledo Botanical Gardens (in season, of course).

It's warm enough for them to grow there, but they need an acidic soil to thrive, so the soil usually needs to be acidified to ke p them happy, same as here.

Rhododendrons definitely grow in northern Ohio, although they can be vulnerable to weather conditions, from memory. I see rhododendrons and azaleas used in landscaping in northeastern Ohio.

If interested in the Heath family of plants, including rhododendrons and azaleas, in northern Ohio, consider visiting Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio.

Rhododendron Discovery Garden

Juvenile plants apparently are more susceptible to winter damage.
