Try places in the Fifth-Third field vicinity. I'd recommend the Commodore Perry, though you can probably find something cheaper.

Is there a particular reason you would rather live downtown than somwhere else?

The average rent, according to one site, for Toledo, for a 1 bedroom is $601 (2010)... Which is astonishingly cheap compared to most cities. Although downtown living in Toledo is a relatively new concept they seem to get higher than average rent, except for the apartments that are or look more like projects... You may consider looking in the Old West End (historic/ near downtown); many get apartments draped in hardwoods and architecture with large square footage for a lower than average rent. Disclosure: I own property in the Old West End.

With the Old West End just be careful, I have a feeling many landlords might be more than willing to stretch the boundary lines of what constitutes the Old West End.

To the poster above me, I also think that 601 for a one bedroom gets you a larger apartment than you would get in other cities for their average apartment price.

That is very true. Not everything called "Old West End" is the Old West End. You can be on an immaculate tree-lined street with historic mansion after historic mansion one minute and then make a turn and you have vacant lots and drug houses. I think it is an awesome neighborhood, but I know not everyone can stomach the proximity to blight. Downtown also has its sweet spots (around the arena and field) and it pays to do your research first.

Smile Toledo: is well...

I visit Toledo often to see some of my friends from college. Toledo is not as bad as some people might say. It isn't anything spectacular, but it is a decent place to live. The cost of living is somewhat low. There are some things to do. Like the museum. The Toledo museum is nationally recognized. I almost relate Toledo to my hometown of Detroit. It is certainly much nicer than Detroit. But it has its bad areas and good.

Areas to avoid: downtown area.
Prime locations in Toledo and surrounding Toledo: Sylvania, Perrysburg, Ottawa hills.

The old west end is beautiful, but it has a somewhat higher crime rate. In summary, you will like Toledo!

Default toledo

Rent is extremely cheap in Toledo but theres also a lot of crime in Toledo. I would recommend avoiding downtown. If you want a safer neighborhood, try Sylvania or Perrysburg. You can get a nicer, more updated apartment and while you will pay more, its well worth it.

If you're going to be at UTMC, you may want to be close to that. Sylvania and Perrysburg are too far away (20 minute drive) in my opinion.

The area right around campus has a lot of apartment complexes, any of which would probably feel safer than the old west end - although it seems like the ones around Arlington & Byrne have a shooting about once a year, usually linked to a domestic dispute and not any students or medical professionals.

You don't hear about any crime at the apartments directly on Glendale by UTMC, but I've heard those apartments are not super nice either.

Downtown is actually pretty safe crime-wise... it's more the neighborhoods surrounding downtown that you want to avoid. That would put you only about 10 minutes from work.

Other possibilities could be Maumee, which is very safe and relatively close, or someplace else in South Toledo. There is a complex on S. Byrne just north of Heatherdowns that looks decent. And there are some brownstone rental units in the Beverly neighborhood by the Anthony Wayne Trail.
