Experienced my first Tornado siren on Tuesday here in Oklahoma. I have been coming out here the past 3 years and the late spring and summers have been pretty tranquil until now. When the siren went off I walked over to the neighbor across the street who was sitting on the porch of his house. He said if you have a storm shelter go there if not just ride it out. We don't have a storm shelter so we rode it out. The severe storm did not turn into a tornado. All was well.

Fairly normal around here. The siren means "Come out and look for it!"
20 years ago today (May 3rd, 1999) riding it out was not an option in Moore and South OKC. My BIL had sold his home about 8 months earlier and moved closer to the FAA. The old home was practically wiped from the face of the earth, all that was left was the slab and some plumbing pipes. A famous picture of a neighborhood showed total devastation except for one above-ground storm room intact. A couple weeks later my SIL was graduating from SWOSU, and my wife and I flew into TUL to see her graduate. The cleanup was underway, and we drove down Penn or May and noticed that the pavement had also been blown off the road bed.
It's been quiet in SW OK until the past three days.
