I am currently working in an IT consulting firm.

A few days ago I found out that I have been billing one clients WRONG amount, instead of $250 per month, I have been billing $150, I really don't know why, I think I just careless.

This has been going on for the past 13 months......My boss still doesn't know about it.

I know that I should let my boss know, or start billing the client the correct amount, both of my boss and my client would not be happy about it: for my boss, the company lost money, and the client would think that I am sooo incompetent...................

Now I am just so scared and confused..........

Anyone experienced the similar situation before???

I really don't know what to do now...............

Just be honest. Tell your boss what happened, and then discuss how to broach the topic with the client. We're talking about $1,300 here, a small amount by most measures.

It'll be fine.

Go tell your boss about your error and then he/she will figure out how to solve the issue with your client.

Will your boss be irritated with you? Probably, but she/he will be a lot less irritated if you fess up rather than having the error found by the auditors.

If you know how my boss bullies me, you would understand why I hesitate to bring it up...........

It could be up to $2,000. Even it is $20, my boss would shout at me for it....

Wow. Find other job. That's not a good work environment and not something I would expect at an IT consulting firm.

The more you drag it on the worse it's going to get. Either confess to your boss or try to lose the client somehow by recommending a different company or something.

If the client signed a contract for $250 a month, it doesn't matter what you were billing - they are still on the hook for the full amount.

Thx for all the advise.

I would talk to my boss about it. Actually I think it has been 20 months, so the amount should be $2,000.

The worst is I would need to pay this amount by myself to the company, and I would recommend this solution for solving the past. Going forward, I would let my boss talk to the client.

No, you don't need to pay the amount to the company. The company you erroneously billed would either be on the hook for it, or the company you work for would have to write it off. By no means should you pay the money to your employer unless a court orders you to do so.
