I'm going to be visiting Toronto for the July 4 weekend (or Canada weekend) and was wondering if there were any fun events/fairs/festivals or things to do around town. I've been to Toronto a couple times and done the bars/walking around downtown/museums - so looking for something a little more off the beaten path (locale). What do you all do for fun over the long holiday weekend? Or where do you escape? Thanks! Late 20's professional male - just in terms of ideas.
The Gay Pride festival is that weekend as well. Extended drinking hours for gay bars that apply for the license (until 4 a.m.) and you definitely don't have to be gay to enjoy yourself.
The Beaches (east end) and Harbourfront are great places by the water. Fireworks over the lake as well around 9:30 or 10. Shop on Queen St. - funky stores. Gay pride parade is huge that weekend with lots of activities all that week and weekend around Yonge St., Church St. etc. Toronto Zoo is great but out of the city. Take a ferry across the lake to the Toronto Islands. Go to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake for a day. Our city has so much to do so enjoy yourself.
One of the things I always found amazing about Toronto is the residential neighborhoods in the central core. Take advantage of taking the long way when walking from one place to another--if you're into seeing different kinds of housing stock and that sort of thing. I love cutting through Cabbagetown on a nice day, for example. Also, the ravines are a unique part of the urban geography. If you're up on Bloor St. East, you can catch a trail called Milkman's Run and take it down into the ravine and all the way to the Brickworks (which is an organic market and park).
