We are coming to Toronto for the film festival the weekend of Sept. 9-11. I use a wheelchair and need hotel accommodations that would enable me to get around. A downtown hotel would be ideal, but we haven’t been able to find anything under $200 a night.
I noticed that the more suburban hotels are quite reasonably priced. Is there a hotel that is near a subway line that would enable me to get on the subway to come downtown? I really don’t want to worry about having a drink and driving, parking, etc. Is the subway system accessible for wheelchairs?
Anything along the subway line will cost you at least $150-$200. Anything cheaper will be a bus ride away from the subway station and won't be much cheaper then $140.
Most stations are wheelchair accessible. Here is a list of the stations on the line you will most likely be traveling on. TTC Yonge-University-Spadina
The subway system has some accessible stations, but not all are accessible (especially on the Bloor line). Although I'm very familiar with the subway system, only recently I tried this out with a baby stroller and it was eye opening. The transfers and elevator locations can be really inconvenient.
Having said that, I'll point you out to the Novotel North York which is located at the North York City Centre subway station. I've never stayed there, but I'm familiar with the area and the nearby subway station is one of the newer ones on the system and has a very convenient elevator to the subway platform. But I think the accessible access to this elevator is from Empress plaza which is on the east side of Yonge (across the street from the hotel). The surrounding area is great too. Subway ride to Union St. is about 30 mins.
