I am moving to Toronto next months. I have been an elementary school teacher in Asia for over 10 years, and teaching Piano with ABRSM Advance cert.

I really like to teach music, and concern if I could find a job in Toronto ?
Is it easy to find a job in teaching music, or in elementary school ?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I am a teacher currently working in vancouver. i have been applying to the toronto district school board for many years and have not been able to get work. I know teachers in toronto who have not been able to get work. I grew up in toronto but it is not a good time for teachers in the big cities because of the economy. Older teachers are not retiring and there are lots of younger teachers graduating.

You can apply to private schools and Monsteserrie schools. You can also try the Catholic Schoold District but there are 1000's of teachers trying to get work in the city so do not expect to find work for at least 1 to 2 years. You will need to get a certificate from the Ontario College of Teachers and they usually take 6 months to process it.

The best thing to do is to try and find work outside of toronto. There are many school districts that are hiring all over ontario and working in one of these after a few years can get you a door into eventually working in Toronto. Here is a link to all of the school boards in ontario.

Ontario School Boards

Good Luck!
R
