TORONTO (AP) — Canada has ordered the deportation of a female soldier who fled the U.S. military in order to avoid the war in Iraq, officials said Thursday.
War Resisters Support Campaign spokeswoman Michelle Robidoux said that Citizenship and Immigration Canada has ordered Kimberly Rivera to leave the country by Sept. 20.
Canada cannot apply a double standard and it has always bothered me that it has done so in the past.
While in the RCN and waiting for my release papers; I was detailed as the only available (surplus) killick on the watch to attach to Shore Patrol and fly to San Diego to escort an AWOL sailor back home to the west coast base of HMCS Naden where he was given a Commander's Table and sent to Alberta to serve his punishment sentence.
The U.S. authorities had no problem whatsoever in turning him over at our request sooooo.....? Goose meet Gander.
Draft dodging is one thing; AWOL is another but desertion is something else entirely.
All militaries other than impromptu defensive militias are illegitimate machinery of the ruling class to force those on the lowest rungs of society to fight and die so that the rich can increase their wealth. As such, both the Canadian and U.S. militaries should be immediately disbanded and the top ranks should be prosecuted for the war crimes they have committed.
She signed up for it, and true, AWOL is one thing, but she decided to take that bet, have a few Canadian kids (for insurance?) and she lost.
And not to be a total dick, but there are/were Canadians out in Afghanistan who likely had very similar thoughts of leaving but stayed and ended up dying there. If these war resistors really believe in their organisation let's see them go to the home of a dead Canadian soldier and explain to their families why our taxpaying dollars should be used to shelter foreign AWOLers.
Canada used to be America's wiser younger sister. Now they are America's little b***.
Sorry, no sympathy for deserters here!

The fact there is no longer a draft or conscription kinda viods your silly argument. Nobody forced her to enlist.

It's sad that many join the military just for financial reasons and see it as their only solution... but she volunteered, got a $8,000 bonus, deserted after 1 year, and had two anchor babies in Canada.

She did not desert. But it would be very interesting to see how she would have been treated here if she did.
Apparently she originally went for financial reasons. Perhaps once in Iraq she saw things... perhaps unlike the thousands before her she dared question the orders given to her, the validity of the war. When told that she had to return Iraq could she have just said no? Seek asylum in Canada? Should she have stayed in the USA and told everyone about the terrors of the illegal war? And would those hungry for blood even bother to listen?
I don't know much about the women from this article other than she and her husband have 4 kids. Once returned to the USofA she risks up to 5 years jail time like deserters before her. But is she a criminal?

It is not the soldier's job to question the validity of the objective, it is the soldier's duty to follow orders.
She joined the military for "financial reasons" which I would imagine included a free college education and health care for her kids. However, when it came time to hold up her end of the bargain, she jumped ship at a moment's notice. I fail to see why anyone would be defending her.

My father was born in Canada and served three years in the U.S. army from '62 to '65. He had little respect for deserters that claimed amnesty in Canada and thought all of them should be immediately deported to face Court Martial. Seeing how the penalty for desertion during wartime used to be execution by firing squad, she should feel lucky she is only facing 5 years imprisonment. It is not a huge leap of logic to assume that a deserter leaves the other members of his or her platoon at greater risk by their actions. So to answer your question, yes she is a criminal.
