Sounds exciting. The energy and buzz is what we'd like to experience. I'd be interested in how you compare the festivals. Telluride I'd love to get to.
Are you able to find specific hotels on Hotwire, other than the area? I see Downtown West and Downtown East, and the section you mentioned is on the north side of Downtown East. Indeed, looking at the site now, there are some good deals.
Unfortunately there's no way to know how many students I'll have in my class until September, so I can't do prepays. I have to find a hotel that I can make a reservation with an overestimation of rooms ahead of time, but allows cancellation. I'm presuming you've planned far ahead of that timeline when visiting TIFF.
Hi, this thread is a little old but in case someone is still looking for accommodation for TIFF, we have a 4 bedroom townhouse in downtown Toronto that is available for TIFF. Normally by now, this townhouse would be long gone but we had a cancellation so it's up for grabs. The rate is $500/night for a booking for the entire length of the festival or $600/night for shorter stays. It is the perfect place to stay for larger groups, but is comparably priced to 2 hotel rooms. We have 43 verified reviews on Tripadvisor. Here is the link to the townhouse listing:

The townhouse is free from September 5-17 (entire length of the festival).
We also have a 3 bedroom penthouse condo in downtown Toronto with amazing views of downtown and the lake (the best view in Toronto). It has been booked for part of TIFF but it still available from September 12-18.
