I'm a designer from Montreal and I am planning to move to Toronto to find more creative job opportunities (such as graphic, advertising or fashion design).

Montreal is a smaller city, so we have it all crammed up in "downtown" but since Toronto is bigger, I'm wondering if there may be a few districts recognized for fashion, graphic or advertising design firms. If they do exist, please let me know - I would greatly appreciate it!

I also have another question! Would it be realistic to travel everday from Scarborough to Toronto for work... Or is it too far? Thanks!

Toronto's fashion industry is definitely concentrated mostly in the West End, between Spadina and Dundas West, from the Gardiner north to Bloor. Liberty Village (the real one, with all the warehouses), and Queen West, plus parts of the Entertainment District have a high concentration of designers.

Scarborough is a part of Toronto, and tonnes of people do this commute every day. I'd recommend living as close to the subway line as possible. Driving during rush hour sounds horrible.

Any area in OT with a high concentration of warehouses that is close to a major commercial thoroughfare has plenty of design and fashion-related businesses. In Riverdale, there are also some spots around Eastern Ave., and along Carlaw. Corktown also used to have lots, but I'm not sure now with all the redevelopment there.

You may find living outside of the downtown core detrimental to making friends / business contacts in your industry as after hour social activity is a part of the working life in these industries. Personally I'd recommend you live no further than 6 subway stops outside of work in any direction.
