Actually quite a bit of the Community Colleges in Canada have Articulation agreements with Universities not just in Canada but around the world. You can get the best of both worlds with a practical 3 year College Diploma coupled with doing another year of Uni at one of the articulation agreement institutions and get a Bachelor's degree - same period of time - 4 years. I could get a BSC degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida with my College Diploma in just one year. I haven't done it because i'm happy enough where I am in the corporate world.
I really think it depends on which vocation a person chooses and what they want to do in life. I'm mentioning this however because there is certainly more than one way to skin a cat.
