some people say it's 1/4 the size of nyc and that's it's smaller than Boston (they'd have to be considering metro areas to say that) and Chicago. but the facts are it is a lot bigger.

i don't consider what the books say I just look at the area around the city and how many people are within a certain distance of the city.

in 600-700 square km's in the city here's the population of Toronto, Boston, Houston, Chicago

boston 232 sq km's 590-600 thousand
Chicago 606.2 sq km's 2.874 million
houston 601.7 sq km's 2.2 million
toronto 630 sq km's 2.5 million
Dallas 385 sq km's 1.24 million

the official metro areas (the areas of these places is usually not said)

Boston 11,685 sq km's but Boston's csa which probably covers 25-30 thousand sq km's is usually listed. that area has 6-7 million people.
Chicago 28,163 sq km's
houston 26,061 sq km's
toronto 7,125 sq km's
dallas 24,059 sq km's

why is metro Toronto quoted in 7,125 sq km's when 1/3rd of all Canadians (11.5 million people) live within 150-200 km's of the city ?
and the horseshoe area around the city which covers 25-32 thousand sq km's (the same area as most US metro areas) has 8.1-9 million people ?
that would mean it's the same size as Chicago but on world metro city lists Chicago has 9-10 million people and Toronto has 5-6 million ?

if Buffalo is in the horseshoe area (the American ones include very large areas around the cities so this should be allowed) the horseshoe area has 9.7 million people and is the third largest.

that would make Toronto about half the size of New York City.

Blame it on different organizations (United States Bureau of the Census vs. Statistics Canada) in different countries that establish different criteria for what the boundaries of a metro area are to be.

Stats Can’s definition of a metro area is generally much more restrictive than the definition commonly used in the U.S. I live in the Ottawa-Gatineau area and there are lots of towns that are truly in the urban area’s "commutershed" that aren’t included in the metro population.

This is particularly annoying when the issue of market size is discussed (for example, regarding pro sports teams), and the U.S. cities’ metro populations are compared the Canadian ones (often considered to be too small).

So Salt Lake City (just over 1 million in its metro) is big enough for an NBA team, but Quebec City (officially 750,000 according to Stats Can but over 1 million in its greater area if the U.S. measure were used) is seen as too small for the NHL? Hmmmm...

Montreal is another underrated city.

Sydney, Australia has 12,145 sq km's and has 4.2-4.3 million people and greater Montreal has 3.6-3.7 million people but that only covers about 4,259 sq km's. If Montreal had 10-20 thousand sq km's it might have 5 million people. Montreal is probably bigger than Sydney but on world city population lists it's way behind.

GRMIKE The reason you heard Toronto is 1/4 of the size of New York is because they are talking about city population not metro. Toronto 2.5million and New York 8.2million. Back in 1998 old Toronto had a population of 675thousand until they extended the borders from 97sqkm to 640sqkm which brought it up passed montreal at 2.5million.
