Hi

I wondered if anyone could help me with a bit of advice about journalism in Toronto....

I've been working as a journalist in England for the last six years and am hopefully moving to Toronto for a few years in the summer, with a view to working as a journalist there.

I have experience as a news reporter and features writer on a daily newspaper and a glossy lifestyle magazine as well as a BA hons degree and the NCTJ accredited NCE Journalism qualifications (includes law, shorthand etc).

I wondered what the job market is like for journalists in Toronto (the newspapers in the UK are really struggling just now) and what qualifications editors are looking for... Would it help if I tried to arrange some work experience when I arrived to try and prove myself, or should firing off some resumes and covering letters be enough?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you : )

It would probably be best to try and get a foot in the door before you actually arrive; perhaps some enquiries on the letterhead of your current gig might be effective.

Toronto is home to 4 major newspapers: The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, The Globe and Mail, and the National Post.

The is also an outfit called Metroland which has its fingers into almost a hundred publications in Ontario.

There are, of course, a whole slew of other magazines, throw-aways, etc.
