Hi,
I've done my reading, and exhausted my search on the internet on my question, which involves a stop and layover. Didn't get many results 'cept for two, one of which had a formative plan. The Poconos mountains via this route and heading for Batavia, ny.
Anyways, here goes - to cut to the chase. I've driven this driven this drive once before in the dead of winter, and don't have an aversion to doing it in one go at all, but would like to switch it up this time . Incidentally on that trip there was a blizzard and I found a nice hotel luckily after getting off the road, to spend the night in.
This time around, I want to enjoy/savour my trip. that is why I am doing this.
I want to be able to drive from NY for 3 or 4 hours ( I will have no choice but to start off from here late in the day, by the way) and layover at a nice hotel. Some decent restaurants nearby, add a sportsbar and I'm a happy man.
Short of finding a definitive answer, I am just going to wing it with a Hotel like I did that fateful winters day. I had thought about heading to a resort or something like Mohegun Sun, but, (a) it makes it 11 hours, (b) its only a 2 hour trip the first day of travel to get there, and (c) it can be expensive.
So fella's, any advice yall have into this dream/goal is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Perhaps you'd have better luck asking about upstate New York over in the New York forum.

Ive driven the NYC-Toronto route too many times.
My suggestion is to stop in Ithaca for a few days. Great restos, wineries.. Cornell has an in-house hotel run by their hospitality school, Statler Hotel..
eat at the famous Moosewood Restaurant in town...
then make your way to Ontario and stop in Niagara on the Lake (not Niagara Falls) for more cuteness.. then head on to Toronto

you'll love Ithaca.. gorges and waterfalls, interesting restaurants, cool university town vibe.. and yummy wine... but of course stop in Niagara, Ont. to try the ice wine.. if you have a bicycle, bring it along as its fun to bike around Niagara (by the gorge, around Niagara on the Lake...)
Corning is also a cute town and its main attraction is the Glass museum (it was actually a lot more interesting that I expected) and a museum of western art.. but I'd stick with Ithaca and the finger lakes..

I live in Southern New Jersey and half my relatives live in Toronto. I've driven to Toronto more times than I can possibly remember by every route possible in all 4 seasons. My favorite no matter what the season but preferrably spring, summer or fall, would be up 81 and crossing into Canada at the 1000 Islands. If you don't mind driving 4-5 hours from NYC you can stop and stay on the American side of the border at a little town called Alexandrai Bay located directly on the 1000 Islands. There are all types of accomodations from thrifty to luxury with plenty to do.

I concur. Thats the longer route to Toronto but its pretty.
And you can check out historic Kingston, ON which is nice to explore.
