This is typical.

I'm surprised no one is talking about how warm the climate will be in the future. In 50 years, the major great lakes cities are projected to have a subtropical climate similar to that of Virginia.
Easy come, easy go....
NYC high tomorrow a subtropical balmy 1c

Dallas, TX also 1c high....not exactly convertible weather.

if I am not wrong, NYC is at a balmy -4C right now. Toronto is -9C at present. This is exactly the typical temperature difference between the two cities in the winter.

Seems the same cold air just takes an extra 12 hours to arrive in east coast US.

I have less a problem with how cold Toronto's winter is than how long it is. Having to wear layers in March and April is just too much. I remember the entire April 2013 was pretty miserable and winter-like.

Last week we had temps of -10*C. Yesterday it was 15*C and sunny in the heart of Toronto. This time of year is very unpredictable in TO weather-wise.

January average
Spokane:high 1.2C, low of -4.1C, Record -30C.
Toronto:high -0.7C, low -6.7C, Record -32.8C.
Chicago:high -0.3C, low -7.7C, Record -33C.
Wikipedia

So this idea that Toronto is border-line sub-Arctic in winter beyond the possible experience of the lower 48 is not founded in real stats. It's similar to most Mid-Western cities, and milder than most at the same latitude. The one's in the northern Mid-West are considerably colder than Toronto in winter.

Winter like in Toronto in April? Wow, our temps last April were nowhere winter like here in Windsor. Here's our month stats for last April, not like winter at all.

Daily Data
Toronto in April 2013 was 2.7C - 11C on average. 9 days register subzero lows. The low was -1 on as late as April 21.
It definitely felt colder than normal April days.

When I used to live in the city core among the towers downtown windchill was pretty much always a factor or possibly a touch worse than where there would be no wind tunnel effect.
