"Expensive" is a relative term -- if you make $10,000 a week, a waterfront condo at half a million is no big deal, but if you make $10,000 a year the closet you'll get to that condo is scrounging in its dumpster.
Perhaps you could elaborate on what both your means and expectations are.
It really depends where you are. My friends from Los Angeles found everything to be pretty expensive here, on the other hand, someone from London, UK will find Toronto quite affordable.
Toronto has quite a high standard of living. Assuming that you're not a multi-millionare (cutting out the Bridle Bath, Rosedale, and Forest Hill) some expensive areas are the Beaches, Leaside, Cedarvale, Willowdale, the Annex, and High Park. Other nice areas that are more affordable are East York/Beaches (the border along Kingston Road and Gerrard, etc) I guess it all depends on your price range and preferences. If you gave me those I could give you some advice on where to look.
Think about Hamilton. It's 30 miles from TO. It's way less expensive. It is so central to a lot of places. Niagara, Kitchener waterloo area and others. It's a cool town. It reminds me of Pittsburg Pa. a lot and I love Pittsburg. No Hamilton Penguins though.
