Ok, so we settled on moving to the York Region, mostly because the schools seem to be great (scores).
We'd like to settle around south Richmond Hill or south Vaughn, maybe Maple.

Are there any neighborhoods that we should avoid due to safety as we have young kids?

No reason for concern in any area in either city. The one limiting factor affecting your choice may be your price range for a home---Richmond Hill can be very expensive and Vaughan (mind the 'a') is no bargain either. Both are excellent choices for raising a family. I like Richmond Hill more because it's more central (closer to Yonge Street) and the housing stock has more character, but as far as safety goes, you and your kids are fine either way.

York Region is very Safe area, no need to worry.
nice people, nice place. Richmond Hill and Vaughan are both great places
Richmond Hill is more of a city than Vaughan, Vaughan is mostly residential and rural areas.

Both places are nice.

And Welcome to York Region.
