As I was looking at rental companies, I came across this webpage:

http://www.torontohousing.ca/rent

They have a subsidized rent program (geared towards low-income individuals), but then they also have the Market Rent program, by which tennants rent a property at regular market values. If their rental fees are the same as (or, as I could see, even slightly higher than) any other rental company, is there any advantage in renting from them? I was thinking that, since they are a government agency, maybe they would guarantee the quality of their services and the proper maintenace of the rental units(e.g., good plumbing, good heating, etc.) . Also, I would think that landlord abuse (e.g., a constant rent increase) would be less likely to happen. But then again, they may be renting out older properties that may have long-term issues, or they may have poorly trained on-site managers, just like anyone else.

Has anyone had any experience with that program (Market Rent)? Or does anyone know of someone who has rented through that program, to see what their experience was?

If you can afford market rent then I would say stay out of those Toronto housing projects, especially if you have kids. Most of those complexes are very ghetto and crime ridden. I havent been to all the housing complexes but the few I have visited are places I would never wanna live in even if I were indigent.
