How good were the 1997-01 Toyota Camry's? I've always liked the Camry's from that era and they were my second favorite generation of the Camry's after the 1992-96 models, I also thought the 1997-01 Camry's weren't nearly as big and overstyled like the newer Camry's were.
Super reliable, I owned one and it was the best car I ever bought. That is the car that sucked me into Toyota as I am sure it has with millions of people. However, I think my next car that I buy will be a Nissan, I just want something a little sportier and I have hard Toyota isn't as good as it used to be, but still it's one of the best brands.
Their reliability is only beaten by the '92-'96 Camry's. If you go on to any college campus in Cali you'll see the parking lots filled with them because you can neglect basic maintenance and they'll still keep on ticking. It's hard to kill these beasts.
My mom has a 2000 Camry and it's never given her any trouble whatsoever. It still looks like new and only has about 84,000 miles. Before she purchased the car, she was given some advice by her longtime mechanic to look for one that was actually manufactured AND assembled in Japan (the VIN number supposedly contains a "J") as opposed to one assembled here in the U.S. (Kentucky?).
It looks just like the one pictured below (same color and wheels):

I agree... the 1992-96 was the best IMO, but the 1997-01s were excellent as well... the only negative I ever heard was that potential oil sludge issue that plagued some of them, but still so many on the roads. Starting in 2002, they started going downhill.
