Huge rip-off--that's what you pay for a V8 timing belt change, which is much more difficult and time consuming.

I know about the sludge issue and how prone these model years are to it - I still have the letter from Toyota in my records.. I was just pointing out that my particular car just hasn't suffered from it. For that matter, neither has my in-laws '98.

I'm usually pretty anal about the oil changes, and was even moreso after the problem was brought to my attention. So far so good.

Glad to hear. Just make sure (if you haven't already) to replace your PCV Valve, which was the major cause with the engine sludge. It didn't properly let the exhaust fumes out. $5 part and a google on how to replace it yourself.
