I am wanting to improve the performance of my toyota camry LE 1998. Would getting an newer engine and transmission help do that?

Yes, but only if the new engine and transmission comes with a 2008 Camry.

Can't you put in a V6 from 1998 Camry?

There is no reason to improve the performance of a 16 year old Camry. It is what it is.

Replacing the engine in a car that old will more than likely cost more than what the car is worth, upgrading the engine and tranny...you'd be better off finding the car with that engine and just driving that car.

As stated above it wouldn't be cost effective.

But give more details. What is it doing specifically that you don't like and what is your specific goal? Some aftermarket parts may help a little but it depends on your expectations.

Your car is not worth putting newer engine and transmission in. Simply do complete tune up and cleansing. Btw, what do you mean by "performance"? More power? Better gas mileage? Those are different "performance" aspects.

No. There's no value in doing that. $3000 later, you'd still have a Toyota Camry. Camrys are designed for people who value a smooth quiet ride over performance.

Sell the Camry. Buy a different car. If it's your parents' car or if it was given to you, grin and bear it, and better luck next time.

Would be much easier and probably cheaper to just buy a 1998 V6 Camry. (But why? Buy something else--the Camry V6 has good power, but it still handles like a Camry.)

And that doesn't even count the substantial amount that a good-running 4-cylinder Camry would bring if sold.

Find a Lexus SC300 with a 2JZ-GE I-6 and swap the 1998 Camry SE body onto the SC300 chassis and make a neat RWD 1998 Toyota Camry

Or just buy a Z30 1991-2000 Lexus SC300 and trade your 1998 Camry SE for it since bang for the buck it is hard to beat the older and super reliable yet fun to drive SC300/400 of the 1990's
