My 2009 Camry got whacked in the left rear quarter yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt. There's damage on both rear quarters, but it looks like the rear door and trunk lid are intact.I can't see if there's any frame or suspension damage, but the left rear tire has a scuff on it, so it was part of the contact.

I'm guessing at least several thousand dollars in repairs. Worst case, it might be enough to total the car. I was wondering what the forum thinks.

That is a pretty severe hit. I would say at least 4-5K in damage. They might total it out.

It hit hard enough on the left to kink the right q-panel. That's gonna do some special damage to the frame. If repairable, the good news is that frame racks are very sophisticated that they do a pretty good job. Were it my car, I'd argue for a total loss. If it does get repaired very carefully monitor the rear tires tread wear. They may tell you there are unresolved problems. Here's another trick, after repairs take a long piece of twine and have someone hold a marked area to the center of the right front hub and stretch of out to the right rear center hub and mark it there as well. Those same 2 marks should line up on the left side as well. If not, you could have a sway issue. BTW, look carefully on the roof and check for an slight warpage. If so, total that darn thing.

Good suggestion, I hadn't thought to check the roof. I'd like to see them total it. It sucks that I just put tires on it and it's only got 60k miles.

As a long time claims rep, PM me if they do total it and you're having problems. My best advice is to do a search of your area (and if need be stretch it out) and fine the same year/make/model and then try and see if it generally compares to your (mileage, features...) and NADA may have values for those add-ons. Try and find 3, take an average (after adjustments for mileage, conditions, options) and that should give you a fair market value.

I've done that, and come up with anything from $7,500 for a dealer trade-in to around $12,500 for dealer retail. Can I make the argument to the ins. co. for the retail price? I assume it should be worth what it was before the accident.

Yes, you should get dealer retail

The rear driver side door is bent out of frame/position. I think they will total the car. Too much work to straighten this car.

Sorry to see this and glad you're ok. Do you have the receipt for the tires?? Maybe include that into insurance claim??

We had the insurance adjuster look at it today. He spent a pretty good amount of time looking it over, and eventually came up with about $4100 for the repairs. If we use one of their preferred shops, which just happens to be the local Toyota dealer who has been servicing the car, any additional 'hidden' damage they find will be repaired. I trust this dealer (as much as one can trust a car dealership), so I think we'll go ahead and have it fixed.
