Honestly, you DO need AWD more than you need 6cyl. As you NEVER know, when you may benefit from it. Even should you live in FL or HI.
Those cars are fairly rare. Toyota stopped making them and they become a find. Engine is too much power for the size and weight. It's a jazzy car.
So be careful. They are known to need a good driver, or the power will show itself.
If it's reasonably priced, go for it. After all, you are adventure girl, right?
The V6 on the 2010-11 Rav4, plus the 5-speed automatic transmission make for a real nice driver. The V6 produces 269HP (if I well remember), and is relatively good about fuel consumption. My wife's 2010 Rav4 V6 does around 29-30 MPG on the highway, and around 21MPG combined driving (city/highway). She does not drive fast at all, never exceeds the speed limit, and she loves her car.
I would like to buy a brand new Rav4 so I can keep the V6, but she politely refuses the offer

What exactly does this mean, I run the risk of losing control, rolling, what?
I am in my 50's and have never crashed yet and have driven more than most...I'm in AZ so not much snow and ice.

It means just that - it's a lot of horse power for the car. I think, that was part why Toyota quit making them - lots of crashes. Most cars are under powered. This one is over powered.
I drove on 6 inches of ICE in Alabama once. My then CR-V did stellar only due to AWD.
You may decide to take an out of state trip and go snowboarding. Floods happen in AZ too, right? Storms? Mud? Those are unpredictable situations when a very good AWD is a find. We stopped buying non AWD cars years ago though we really do not need that feature. Yet, when you know what hits the fan - here you have it.
Ah, associate bought one of those for his wife. He said they sold the car in short time. She had hard time controlling all that power on the road.
That's ridiculous! The V6 Rav4, up to the year 2013, is highly sought by car buyers because this motor is very reliable, and relatively cheap on fuel. My wife, who is I would say..."a timid driver" has no trouble whatsoever driving on ice and snow during the long winters of the interior of Alaska. The extra power is a bonus when you need to pass other vehicles at highway speeds. My 2009 Forester with a 170HP 4-cylinder motor was quite anemic when trying to pass other vehicles.
