Okay. A strange thing happens just this weekend (Saturday) where my air conditioning presently does not function AT ALL. But it happened in the most bizarre way. Here is what occured:
Saturday morning, I changed my oil. All good.
I then (a few hours later) made a short trip. Had the AC on (as usual) since it can get pretty toasty in the car.
This is all in my 1993 Toyota Corolla.
So. Me as my co-worker go decide to see a movie. We leave to get there early, a very nothing-to-do kind of day. So far, so good. We drive 20 minutes on the highway, doing about 70. Then I come to a stop.
Now, things get weird...
Around the time the car slows down, I notice the AC light on the dash is no longer on. Fan is still blowing. My coworker says "You smell that?" I say "Smell what?" (I can't smell.) I DO see a small amount of SMOKE from under the hood. No change in feeling of the engine. None. No temperature gauge shooting up.. nothing. Just some smoke. Disappears after two minutes...
We pull over, check it out, see small amount of oil around oil cap. Coworker tells me there is no oil cap gasket on it. Re-tightens pretty tight. No problems or smoke ever returns. AC does not function.
Presently attempting to see if AC clutch works by applying independent power.. but WHAT HAPPENED?
1. Passenger side kick panel. Toyota Nation seems to say there is a 15A fuse buried up in there somewhere that, if replaced, will make the dash AC light when pressed and AC function again. All I see is a 40A box fuse...
2. Applying independent power, either by jumping/bypassing the relay from Battery Positive to "Pin 87" to see what happens. I need wire to do so.
What should I be looking for when I again shine my flashlight on it? (The belt is still on)
If oil got on the belt it may be causing it to slip.
