Toyota and Panasonic announced a new battery manufacturing collaboration, with Toyota owning 51% of the new company, dubbed "Prime Planet Energy and Solutions". The company is expected to employ about 5,000 people.
Apparently this does not mean that Toyota has changed their view on pure electric vehicles, BEVs - Toyota believes the market is not yet big enough to justify aggressive investment, and plans to keep their main focus in the electric space on hybrids. This project would though, allow them to move more quickly on BEVs, if they revise their current pessimism.
