My 87 will get close to 40 MPG, it will also cruise 80 all day on the Interstate (be getting more like 33-34 MPG, at 80 though)
I personally like the 2nd gen car best, it's a clean design from a styling standpoint. It's a well-made and well-thought-out car, there are a bunch of them still in service, it's a good cheap car for a guy who isn't worried about having all the latest "bells and whistles"
The best built Camry's were the 1987-1991 Generation by far. I have had a couple and they really do run forever with almost no problems. A truly bulletproof car! Forget the newer ones, pure junk!! Here are the reviews on the older and newer Camry's. You will see what I mean.....
If I were gonna buy a Camry I would get myself a pre-1997 model and find one with less than 200,000 miles on it, I'm sure I'll get alot of miles on those Camry's, I do not like the newer Camry's at all, I thought the Camry's from 2002 onward were way too big and tinny looking

My wifes 2004 with V6 has been prefectly reliable as her 1993 Accord was. Bascially the camry is much nicer car tho and much more confortable because the seats have some height and you not laying down as much with outstretched legs.Bascially I found earlier car much less confortable for anyone of ven noraml height.
They wouldn't get anywhere near that MPG because they'd be significantly heavier due to the added weight of all the extra safety features.
Hard to predict that. By spec the cars shouldn't be getting into the high 30s on a regular basis anyway.
Say you add 200 lbs. of weightless stuff like airbags, bracing, etc. and you update the engine with controls and technologies 20 years more advanced than the Gen II.
At least it wouldn't have that awful automated-strangulation neck belt.
1992-96 as far as build quality and materials material, but the 2.2L had oil leak issues, but otherwise bulletproof. I had a '93 Camry LE V6 - excellent car. My aunt has a '93 Camry LE 4-cylinder with 324,000 miles, yes, 324K miles! Great car, but it leaks oil, even after supposedly being in the shop twice to repair it. She parked it and bought a new Yukon.
The 1987-91 models were also well built cars. I had a '87 with 220K and it was totally rattle free. Trannys were weak on some however. I think the 1983-86 models were also nice built cars. I also liked the 97-99 models, which were basically the same as the 00-01 models, but quality slipped a bit. By 2002, seems like the interiors become cheap, hard plastic.

It's a free country, but I'd point out you can buy *a lot* of motor oil for the cost of a new Yukon and the additional gas it would burn...
The 3S-FE 2.2L engine will leak oil out the distributor, into the cap, only cure is a new, used, or rebuilt dist., which ain't cheap, true, but if you get say 150K miles per distributor and it comes off with one bolt...
The other common issues are the cam seal, easily accessed when doing the cam belt, and the oil pump gasket itself, which is not that tough once the cam belt is off. I have done everything except the distributor so far.
I will note that the "auto-strangulation" seat belt "electric mouse" is not my favorite feature of this generation Camry though...
I have to agree on the 92-96. I love that style. If I could buy one in great shape for a good price I'd go with a V-6 with all the options. Those cars did look pretty sharp.
