Car rental question (declined the insurance...guess what?) (cost, rentals, price)

Of course, the one time we decline the insurance, they find a dent on the hood when we return the car. We weren't as careful as we should have been when looking the car over when we picked it up (although granted, it's silver, so it was hard for us to see, and it was on the hood... who looks there?) Beyond that, we honest to God didn't dent it (I don't even know how a dent like this could have occurred, and we had the car sitting in my husband's parent's driveway the whole weekend).
So... I got a bill for $450 today. Now, I know that you can pull dents out for $50 or so. Is there *anything* I can do about this or do I need to pay this? Hoping someone else has run into this.
And yes, I realize that declining the insurance was stupid. I'll never do that again.
UPDATE: Resolved!!! I called Hertz, let them know that the damage didn't happen while the vehicle was in my possession, it was easy to miss upon initial inspection, and the $450 estimate was INSANE considering the gravity of the dent. I also told her that the agent who checked me in when I returned the car told me "don't worry, this happens all the time to people, Hertz probably won't even bill you for it as it's so small". She closed out the case and told me I wasn't going to have to pay it. Nice!
Alot of credit cards provide Coverage for Rentals, Check your with your credit card company. Also some personal auto policies provide that coverage also. But You are also paying for the car to be out of service when it being repaired, But ONLY if all there other cars are rented that day(s). If you can turn this over to your CC they will requet that doc. But if you have have to pay it you get request the actual repair bill, and car unizatlaion reports for that day rentals.
I used my debit card which doesn't carry insurance on rentals, and my coverage (Allstate) doesn't cover rentals
Hoping someone here has experience negotiating with Hertz for the fees. I don't mind paying for it (although if getting out of it is an option, considering we can't imagine how we did it, we'd prefer that), but the price is crazy inflated for what it was. And of course, we didn't take a picture because we were late for our flight. I know, we screwed up 8 ways from Sunday on this one.

Yeah they they mean an additional policy on the car, not your own insurance as a driver.
I'd recommend to the original poster to contact their insurance company to see if the coverage extends to a rental car. You're insured as an driver, the type of car you primarily drive affects your rates but it's still you they are insuring as a driver. For example my car insurance is thru USAA, and their web site says:
"Your regular auto insurance policy typically covers you for the same coverage while driving a rental car (with some limitations, such as leaving the country and loss of use)."
Check if part of the $450 bill is paying for "loss of use", where they don't have it to rent out for x days while it is being repaired. That is where your car insurance or credit car probably won't cover.
