My sister in law has to be perfect and completely organized in everything she does, including preparing for trips. Before her two week trip to Europe she had herself at a fevor pitch and was basically packing for two days straight. So by the time she had to go to the Airport for her overnight flight, she was so tired she felt ill.

While she sat in the Airport Terminal waiting for her flght to be called, she was beyound stressed and just incredibly tired. She kept worrying that she forgot something and everyone in the family were just miserable because they did not have any sleep. By the time they made it to Europe they had all got a bad cold from the exustion.

Do you stay up all night to pack before a long trip?

Apparently not, because she didn't give herself enough time to pack.

Lol! So true:P

If you forget something, then you forget something, what's the big deal? As long as you have your wallet you can always pick up a toothbrush or toothpaste, most hotels will even give this to you for free if you forget. If you don't bring enough clothes you can always use washer and dryers somewhere. Just don't understand how someone could get all frenzied over trip packing. It proves like what seemed already happened to you...they drive you nuts the rest of the trip and don't enjoy anything...and isn't the reason we go away on travel is to relax and enjoy ourselves? May as well have stayed home.

Having been a regular business traveler for 25 years, I can - and do - pack for any trip in less than an hour.

I did that once many years ago and NEVER again. I ended up taking way too many things as I was an inexperienced traveler at the time.. Now the less I take the better. I make sure every piece of clothing matches every other piece I take. If I stick with tan and black with a few white things and one or 2 bright scarves I'm good to go. Also I take only one pair of shoes in addition to the ones on my feet.

Less then 1 hour, All fits into my carryon 19", Some stuff I plan to buy where im going. If I have a rental Car, Big/Bulky, Consumables I stop where I am and pick it up. Also I plan to buy things like T shirts, so i dont pack any. Also bring cloths that are at end of life, so I wear and toss them. Making room to bring stuff home. I spend more time un-packing/re-packing my 13y son suitcase then mine. On long Road trips we will bring more due to time away from home and not contrained by Airline space.

We travel using various modes of transportation (air/RV/Car) and I have made a Pack List which I have broken down to separate lists (warm or cold climate, Maui - 2 months, weekends, etc).

The list enables me to pack a couple of days ahead of time, except for last minute items. What we forget, we buy.

I can't really understand how it would take someone two days to pack. I must admit that sounds a little extreme even to a control freak and worry-wort like myself.

I tend to find it you are very organised packing should take only about half an hour. And at the end of the day unless you have forgotten your passport and plane tickets everything else is not that important.

I find lists to be my best friend when I am preparing for travel. I make very precise lists of what I need to do ( with certain time limits assined to them) and tick things off as I go along. I have been doing home exchanges for over twenty years now so need to prepare my house ( and car) for our guests as well as packing. Organising a pre-travel schedule saves a lot of time and hassles.

Hubby helps as much as possible but packing has never really been an issue as it is if anything the easiest part of travel. Travel documents are the only truly crucial items though.

It seems rather counter-intuitive to get so stressed and exhausted about travelling that one cannot relax and enjoy it.

Most travellers ( myself included) do travel with far too much stuff but I have learnt to pare it down a little and try to keep things as small as possible. Hubby and I share a large samsonite travel bag ( with my vanity case inside it stuffed in a corner of it ) and we seem to manage quite well for 4 weeks.

HELL NO! And I make a lot of overseas trips so packing is kind of a big deal. I am probably a little anal about it too, but I always make a list of what to pack several weeks before I leave and I stick to it. I always figure that if I forget something, I can buy it there. Europe isn't a third-world country after all - they have shops

Surely Europe still persists in a semi-primitive state of communist/socialist greyness. Don't we all wear Mao Blue serge outfits and wander around looking cowed and under-privileged ? ... We have shops but America has... stores... so much better Chilaili don't you know ?

Poor Europeans simply never venture out of their tiny houses and tiny cars as Capitalism has completely passed us by. So I am told on a daily basis on C-D anyway.

Back to John Lewis and Waitrose for me. Those retail hardships might break me.
