well, these types of pictures are 'sometimes' only perceived that way. There's typically a landing or a slope directly underneath but since the camera's not catching it, the picture looks more impressive as far as the "courage" of the subject.
but then again, there are spots that are 2 or 3k of vertical drop.
Yeah, I have a pic of my friend sitting overlooking a valley when we were hiking in Slovenia. When I got the picture back (this was before I had a digital camera) I was amazed how it looked like he was sitting on a cliff and he could easily fall off. In actuality, it wasn't nearly as crazy as it looks.
