I used to do this often when I worked with the airlines as recently as 3.5 years ago....however, I've only have rented 1 car since then. I've heard they've gotten really strict on debit card use. Those that allow it....require you have above average credit and I certainly don't. Are there some that will just require you have a certain amount on it and/or will let you rent but you must buy the CDW, so they car cover themselves? Or are all of them, even Alamo, which I used most of the time, checking credit if you use a debit card?

Hertz will let you use a debit card but they put an additional hold on the card, $200 or something like that. You may want to check on the requirements though, I think you have to be a Hertz #1 Club to use a debit card (think, not sure).
