Me and My husband are going to the Florida Keys in Jan from the 4th to the 8th. Has anyone been there before? Is the weather ok in Jan. What are some things we should do while were there, beside the obvious beach and going out to eat. Any hotel suggestions??
As far as the continental US goes, that will probably be the warmest spot in January, averaging in the mid to high 70s. Where specifically are you going? Key West? Islamorada? Key Largo? Marathon? Knowing that will help to give you recs.
And just know, beaches are non-existent in Key West, so you definitely won't be doing that there! People are always shocked to hear that there are no good beaches there.
I found it boring, but a lot of people love it. Drink a lot, eat a lot and enjoy your vacation. Weather could be hi of 80s or hi of 70 or even 60.. its completely hit or miss in january, but you can rest assured it will be the warmest city in USA on any given day in the winter.
I beg to differ on the "no beaches in Key West". The Southernmost beach, while very small, has white sand, beautiful water and a great little bar/restaurant where you can have a beverage and stare out at the ocean. I believe there is also a pier. There are several more beaches around, none of them very large but pretty. Key West is very commercial, but there is lots to do if you are willing to spend the money. Tours, shows, bar hopping, shopping, fishing, Mallory Square at sunset, harbor sails, etc.
If you want a more laid-back, less crowded and party atmosphere, Islamorada or one of the other islands would suit you better. I suggest you start here and look at each island's site to get an idea which would fit you best.
Even if the weather is beautiful, the water will still be pretty cold for swimming.
Winter in the Keys can be dicey in January & February. Often the winter blasts from up North here make it down to Miami in a couple of days. Expect 70-80 daytime and 65-70 nights. It doesn't cool off much at night, but the humidity is very high.
Contrary - the warmest weather typically in January is in Naples, FL and Corpus Christi, TX.
Islamorada has less touristy things to do that drinking and carousing in Key West. If you want to fish, the Whale Harbor fleet is always ready to go. If you want back-country guides Islamorada has them too.
Basically, the Keys are just a place to go for the relatively unique nature of the place. Drive down and back for the experience, pot luck, and see what catches your eye.
If you scheduled a vacation to the Florida Keys then surely you have some concept of what you want to do and why you scheduled a vacation there. So tell us - are you looking to party (Key West), or to relax (the rest of the keys) or the scuba or to fish? Then we can answer you.
They keys are known for a few things - great snorkeling and scuba diving (in winter, probably need a wet suit), partying and drinking in Key West (as a gay hangout in particular), some good deep sea fishing, beutiful landscapes and sunsets (and a beautiful drive along the keys), or just relaxing in the winter to escape the winter in the north.
It's worth the visit to see, but it is boring IMO.
