I'd don't think I have $3200 worth of items that would either fit in my backpack or travel with me even if I did. We've been fretting over whether it is worth the risk of wife bringing her Kindle.
Same here. Her clothing tastes (and prices) are much different than mine, that much I know! She had her iPad (I would never check mine!) in there as well. I have a feeling the "we never found it" means something else after they saw the contents!
I always bring my Kindle, and keep it in my camera purse that holds my DSLR and lenses. That bag never leaves my side, since I'd die if someone stole my camera!
on a direct/non-stop flight from San Francisco to Atlanta - all my Christmas presents were in it as well as clothing... It never did show up, so someone other than me and my friends and relatives had a wonderful holiday...
p.s. If you don't like the color of the handmade afghan in there, it's still not too late to come clean and send it my way!!!

It's pretty easy to hit $3200 if you are on an extended trip. For a five day business trip for me, it breaks down like this:
Two suits = $800
Five business tops = $300
Underwear and hosiery = $250
Two casual tops = $100
Pair of jeans = $100
Pair of business shoes = $100
Costume jewelry = $100
Cosmetics and toiletries = $300
PJ's = $30
Sweater = $100
Hair dryer/misc. items (corkscrew, mini maglite, travel alarm, etc.) = $100
That's over $2200 right there to replace it all, and doesn't include the laptop, cell phone, GPS, and other items I always carry on, plus the cost of replacing my suitcase--depending on which one I'm traveling with would run between $150 and $600.
Lost a couple Armani shirts in India due to a laundry thief, thankfully my girlfriend speaks hindi we tracked the guy down in dhobi gatts and I was repaid fully for my shirts.. although I never did see them again, I'm sure there's an Indian wearing my shirt somewhere
Not really, In 120 countreis, maybe 2 or 3 things. Cheap ($30) pair of binoculars, from my pack under my seat, in Bogota bus station, by a guy in the seat behind us, who got off before the bus left. My wife had her wallet slipped out of her belly pack while boarding a crowded bus in Shillong, India, but I had all the important stuff in my moneybelt. We've left a few things on buses, but somebody always comes running after us to give them back to us. Somebody grabbed my bag and ran with it, while waiting at immigration in Burundi going to Zaire, but the locals all ran after him and got it back.
My wife left her purse on the Washington State ferry getting off at Shaw Island. We just waited for the ferry to come back a few hours later, and got on, and it was setting right there where she left it.
90% of the people in the world, maybe 99%, if they see you drop money on the sidewalk, will pick it up and tap you on the shoulder and hand it back to you.
That interesting. I lost mine, too. Permanently. I had always had an unerring sense of direction, until I spent a few years south of the equator, where the sun moves across the sky from right to left, and shadows move counter-clockwise on the ground. That knocked my sense of direction out of kilter, and I never got it back.
I've only really lost it once when I was not far from your neck of the woods! I was convinced I needed to head west to get back to Houston via an FM road, whereas it was the other way round. Not like me at all.
My husband "lost" a Fossil watch and mini-mag flashlight once when we went on our first cruise. Didn't know they take your bags from the dock to the room for you. Those 2 items were in an outside pocket on the bag. The bag itself had a lock. Tried to get it paid for by the cruise company, but they contract with the dockworkers, and that got us nowhere. Plus we didn't have a receipt for the items to prove we actually owned them.
He left a nice camera in a Mexican cab one time. We ran to the cab station as soon as we realized it. They asked where we would be (Senor Frog's in Playa del Carmen) and said they would bring it to us. We didn't expect to see it again. About an hour later, they showed up with the camera! . He gave them a nice reward for their trouble. Really wanted our vacation pics mostly, since the camera was insured. They said they were really working on the image many people have of untrustworthy Mexicans. We were impressed.
