My buddy and I want to travel somewhere in March/April. Were both about 25 and want to do something memorable. Right now, Costa Rica is where we are thinking about going. Our budget is about 1k for about 7-10 days. Somewhere with a good party atmosphere and things we can do during the day like hiking or surfing.

Suggestions?

NO MEXICO either!

1k isn't gonna get you much in Costa Rica. We were shocked at how expensive the hotels/food was and we went in low season last year. And, CR is one of our least favorite destinations so I won't be recommending it any time soon!

Were are you located? I can suggest places if I know where you are.

I'd fly out of LAX then, much cheaper rates. There recently was a special to Hawaii, $326 rt from LAX, for travel in March. Not sure if it's still going on, but worth checking out.

As far as good party atmosphere, Miami is great for that. Ibiza (but might be more expensive and a long trip from the West coast). New Orleans is fun, with a good night life, but no surfing. How about Belize over Costa Rica? I think it's a shorter trip and Ambergris Caye is supposed to be nice, though I've never been. Why not Mexico? Huge party place and cheap.

Check TravelZoo for deals from your area, often times we don't pick a destination until we find the best deals.

Been to Hawaii as well as Miami. I don't have any desire to go to Mexico. Maybe N.O. I haven't thought about it before.

I've been to Belize and would second that, it is only about three hours from Houston.

Do a surf-and-turf, a few days inland at San Ignacio then a few days at beach, maybe Caye Caulker. It is a really easy trip money-wise and language-wise perfect for a week.

I think you are better off going to Cartagena, Colombia if thats what you're looking for. Great night life, its touristy so people will cater to you and its safe also. Your money will go a lot further in Colombia than it would in Costa Rica. Plus, from what I've seen.. people don't really go to costa rica to party do they?

1K for 7-10 days would be scraping but that said CR is awesome
We did CR in 1999 for $800 for 9 days but that was before it really hit the map as a tourist destination...

How about the Jersey Shore? Seaside Heights and Belmar will fit your bill, though a bit cold still for swimming!
