My husband and I are visiting Manchester, N. H. in the fall and would like to go to New York City and take the plane from there home to Colorado. Can anyone assist us in a good route to NYC by commuter train? Is the bus better? Maybe rent a car and just drive there. We will be coming there after spending 7 weeks in Europe so simplicity is important.
Maybe others would disagree, but I would rent a car and drive from Manchester to NY. It's about 260 miles. It's a pretty drive and you can control your own plans, and take as little or as long as you would like. And it you time it right, you will have beautifull fall foliage along the way.
You can take Amtrak from Manchester to Boston and Boston to New York, but that will run you around $120 per person. Greyhound will be about half the price and more direct. Renting a car, I'm not sure how expensive it would be, but it would offer the most comfort and flexibility obviously. If renting a car though, I'd return it immediately upon arrival in New York, because actually having a car in Manhattan is less of an advantage and more of a hindrance.
I'd rent a car from Manchester and return it in Stamford, CT. Then you could take the Metro-North Railroad from Stamford into Grand Central. That combination would probably be cheaper and more flexible than taking the train the whole way (and it would avoid the headache of driving into Manhattan). Or just drive all the way into Manhattan. Bottom line, from Manchester, definitely rent a car.
I agree with the others, renting a car and driving there would probably be your best bet. One point though, the traffic in New York is not for the faint of heart so my advice would be to drop the car off to the rental agency as soon as you arrive. New York has a superb subway system and the taxicab service is very good too so you won't be needing that car once you're there.
