We are traveling to Ireland soon and since we're renting a car to be on our own sometimes and also meeting up with friends, we want to get a cheap cell phone that will work in Ireland (neither of ours will). Has anyone done this? Did you buy the phone online? It would be easiest to buy a phone at the airport in Ireland, but I'm just wondering if it will be cheaper online. But if we buy online there's the problem of getting it to us, we leave too soon to have it shipped here...
It is quite the dilemma; I'm hoping some of you more experienced travelers have dealt with this before and can recommend a website or company at the airport... or even something else entirely...
I hadn't thought about asking the rental car company... we haven't officially booked our car, we're still comparing companies to see what's the best deal. We probably will get a cheap prepaid phone. It's so much harder to compare prices when everything is in GBP and some phones are like 2.95! I'm suspicious because it sounds like such a good deal! While the national geographic website (posted above) has phones for $50 for a basic phone and minutes.
Are international pre-paids available everywhere? How about Asia? Then: do you need an extra calling card to dial out?
I've used prepaid phones in South America and Asia, your best bet is getting a calling card and getting a much better rate. I wasted a ton of money using regular minutes i bought. When I was in Asia I would keep maybe 20 minutes on my phone for sending txts and making local calls, if i wanted to call back to the US i'd buy a calling card for 2 dollars and get a 30 minute phone call.
I don't have too much knowledge on bringing a phone overseas, I do know if your phone uses a sim card, you'll have to unlock it.. and if you're on verizon you will get service but youll pay tons of fees on everything.
If your current cellphone is tri-band and uses a sim card and is unlocked, you can just buy a local prepaid sim card. (Customers of T-Mobile USA can get the code to unlock their cellphone if you have been a customer for at least a year I think.)
