Whenever I check into a motel, I get into my room as quickly as possible and close the door. Some people act like the walkway or hallway is their own personal deck and you have to walk past them outside to get to your room while they talk and socialize with people in and out of the room for long periods of time. These people also create more noise for people who are staying next to them by keeping their doors open.
It just kind of creeps me out when people do that.

Since it is impossible to open windows in most hotels/motels, I leave my door open all night while I'm, sleeping, it's the only way to get any clean air in there.

I like to stay at small, locally-owned motels. Some even have 'front porches' with chairs outside. One place we stayed in Chattanooga was like that... everyone sat out on their 'porches' and visited til after dark. "South of the Border" in SC, just before the NC border, was like that - garages for every room, and back porches with chairs where you could sit and talk to people. One night while traveling cross-country, DH and I got swept up into an entire bridal party that had rented most of the rooms in a motel for the wedding the next day. We got to meet the bride and groom, and many of their family and friends, and had a lovely evening.

In the bigger motels, of course, a lot of times whole groups are staying for conferences and events, and while some motel rooms are designated as 'meet and greet' rooms, others are just friends who like to hang out afterwards. It's always best to find out from management if there are any 'meet and greet' rooms for any local or motel events on your floor before you get your room key. Altho' I have to admit that we were invited to a really great breakfast - for free - at a Hiott one morning that was involved in a political convention. They just assumed we were part of the party...
