When you go online to check the status of your passport at Welcome to Travel.State.Gov
there is an option to register your email for updates.
This works !! I got a email today telling me they were done and in the mail.

We applied on May 16th so it will be just about on target with the 10 to 12 weeks.

When you apply online do they ask for your social security#? If so I cant apply that way- too many hackers!!

they ask for your name date of birth and the last 4 digits of you ss#
hubby checked out the site and he said it was secure
this is only to check the status of your application not to apply

this is also where you can print out the proof of application that you will need should your passport not arrive if you are leaving on you trip before sept 30th
