The OBX are really cool. But expect there to be wind. There also isn't too much for younger kids to do (other than the beach of course).

I really prefer Myrtle Beach over the OBX....just more to do, and much nicer beaches! Firmer sand, less undertow, clearer waters....

Thanks. Since im heading up from Florida ill be sure and do Myrtle Beach on my way to the OBX. Looks like the OBX could be under water in a couple more days from Hurricane Irene....so sad for those residents but im sure its old hat to them.

From the south you could go over to Atlantic Beach / Emerald Isle which is very lovely and has has some sightseeing also I believe campgrounds (it is not too far from Jacksonville NC). Also the town of Beaufort NC right above Atlantic beach is great with a nice walkable area. From there you can drive to the Cedar Island Ferry -this is a paid ferry and needs a reservation (about an hour drive from Atlantic Beach- very nice drive) to Ocracoke - it is about 2.25 hrs by ferry. Ocracoke is only accessible by ferry and the main town area is really quaint. There is also a campground on Ocracoke. From Ocracoke you take the free ferry to Hatteras and then you can spend the rest of the time there. It is a large area so driving all over the place can be exhausting so really try to plan ahead. Also up above hatteras is Roanoke island which is another nice area to explore. I really think that with some moving around and some staying put and relaxing 2 weeks would be the perfect amount of time even for that time of the year.
