I often travel solo, and enjoy it. Maybe its selfish but I do things on my time, at my speed, and dine when I want. I do a lot of homework about places I go so I avoid tourist traps, and try to find unique things about an area. I've traveled with friends who just want to lay around, or are suckers for Hard Rock Cafe and that crap. Not my scene, Im more into adventure travel.

even when I meet foreigners here in the US, it makes me wonder and research where they are from. I've met lots of Eastern Europeans, so naturally I am interested to visit there, especially the Czech Repub. and Poland, Hungary, Romania and so on. and since I don't think any of my friends share this interest, i will undoubtedly go alone!! Can't wait!!!
Totally! I go to this one Crepe restaurant (La Creperie on 30th in San Diego, near University...best Crepes in San Diego...gotta support my favorite restaurant) where the guy who usually makes them is from Tunisia. I love just talking with him about his home country, and about life in general because he has such a different perspective than I do. I feel sad for people who don't like foreigners because I've learned so much from them!
One of the drawbacks on travelling alone is dining. Sometimes it is hard to try a lot of cuisine by yourself without wasting food. For instance when I was in Salzburg by myself I wanted to try the famous Salzburger Nockerl, unfortunately the order serves 3 people so I could only eat 1/3rd of it and people looked at me wierd for ordering this entire thing for myself!
Some places and activities are also priced for couples only and not singles, for instance cruises.
Another big drawback is you have to either lug your stuff into places you really don't want to (the restroom etc.) and that can slow you down.
I have a little 250 Honda Helix. My DH doesn't enjoy riding so I take off by myself most of the time. I do have a group I ride with on Thursdays but most of the time I am on my own. I spend time on the computer looking up destinations places to go. I have discovered so much about my area while doing that. Many times I am gone from sun up to sun down and have a ball. I have put on 7th miles this summer. I almost always have a book to read so when I go in to eat I take a book and just read and relax. I've always been fine by myself....
ok, i'm planning a vacation for later this year, alone! It will be my birthday present to myself. I'll be 40...I like shopping, hiking, site seeing, festivals, music, drinking....any ideas? I don't have set dates so open to ideas...Ive already done a cruise so I don't want to do that this time.

It's a big world. Do you have any countries in mind?
